Voices from the Snow is a unique combination of Tsugaru literature alternated with explanatory essays that aims to give the reader a physical feel for this area in northern Japan. It is the first publication in English of the award-winning stories "Tsugaru Jonkarabushi," "Tsugaru Yosarebushi", and "A Voice in the Snow" by Hideo Osabe (69th Naoki Prize, 1973), "Grannies' Lodge" and "Yasaburo's House" by the poet Kyozo Takagi (his English debut in fiction), and two Tsugaru folktales. Essays by reputable scholars cover the fields of Tsugaru-shamisen music, Tsugaru folk song, Tsugaru folk religion, and the role of oni (demons) in Tsugaru folklore. They are aimed at the common reader, although specialists will also find much new information here. Thirty-seven gorgeous color plates, extensive bibliography, comprehensive list of personal and geographic names.
