内容紹介
本書は日本麻酔科学の200年間の歩みを総説的に述べたもので、邦文はもちろんのこと、英文の著書としても類書はない。日本麻酔科学史は1804年に華岡青洲が乳癌手術を全身麻酔下に行ったのが嚆矢である。半世紀後オランダから吸入麻酔法が伝えられ華岡流の麻酔法は衰退した。明治初期に日本はドイツ医学を採用したが、同国で発達した局所麻酔法がわが国で歓迎された。しかしわが国はドイツ医学のみに目を奪われ、1920年以降イギリスとアメリカで発達した全身麻酔法を無視した。こうしてわが国は太平洋戦争を迎えた。1950年アメリカから医学使節団が来日し、医学部教授たちに最新の医学を伝えたが、彼我の差が最も顕著であったのは麻酔科学であった。以来、麻酔科学の重要性が認識され、1952年に東京大学に最初の麻酔科学講座が開講され、1954年には日本麻酔科学会が創立された。1963年には本邦最初の専門医制度を発足させた。興味あるエピソードも紹介されている。
