太平洋戦争敗戦後、日本の医療、とりわけ麻酔科学は大きく進化した、いや"進化させられた"。第一の進化はSams准将の医学教育制度改革によるインターン制度の導入（1946年）であり、第二の契機は1950年の日米医学教育者協議会であった。この協議会で、日本の外科医たちはアメリカの麻酔科学の進歩に驚愕することになる。これを契機として、日本では麻酔科学の研究が始まり、多くの留学生がアメリカで学んだのである。
なぜそのようにして麻酔科学は遅れをとっていたのだろうか。敗戦以前の麻酔科学の遅れの原因はこれまで深く探求されてこなかったが、本書では、明治維新からさらに江戸時代にまで遡って原因を追究し、国内的要因と国際的要因の両面を明らかにする。日本の麻酔科学史の全体像を明らかにした前著A Short History of Anesthesia in Japanに続いて、具体的な諸問題についてさらに深い洞察を提示する画期的著作である。巻末に日本麻酔科学史の詳細な年表を付す。

Anesthesiology is one of the clinical specialties which have developed since the end of the Pacific War in Japan. Before the war, even lung surgeries for lung tuberculosis were performed under local anesthesia supplemented with subcutaneous morphine in the country, while general anesthesia using tracheal intubation was widely employed in the United States. This book clearly unfolds the main reasons why the advance in anesthesiology was retarded in Japan before the end of the Pacific War.
